Rebecca Stewart


rebecca stewart Rebecca Stewart is an (ethno)musicologist and singer, retired head of the early vocal department of the Brabants/Fontys Conservatorium and co-founder/ex ‘maestro di cappella’of the Cappella Pratensis. She received her PhD in ethnomusicology in 1974 after having worked for many years in Hindusthani classical music. Since moving to The Netherlands in that same year she has concentrated mostly on early western music. After having taught for seventeen years in the Royal Conservatory of The Hague (as co-founder of the Baroque singing department and as a teacher of theory), she was invited to begin a new early music department in Brabant in which singers (and later instrumentalists) received a vocally-oriented practical and theoretical education which extended from the earliest chant traditions of Western Europe to the end of the Renaissance. She has published several articles concerning the relationship between singing and modal music. Primarily in her function as leader of the Cappella Pratensis she has made many CDs. After her retirement she formed and is leader of the Ensemble and Center Cantus Modalis. She continues to give concerts, workshops and lecture demonstrations.

Martin Erhardt


Martin Erhardt, born in 1983, has studied recorder, early keyboard instruments and music theory at the Hochschule für Musik Weimar. He has specialized in Medieval and Renaissance music in the Department of Modal Music at the Brabants Conservatory in The Netherlands. He is currently teaching 'Improvisation in Early Music' at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Leipzig and as a guest teacher at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst Frankfurt. He is also teaching music theory at the Hochschule für Musik Weimar and recorder at the Konservatorium Halle. In addition he is active as a freelance musician, playing recorder, harpsichord, portative organ and singing in several ensembles for Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music, including Ensemble all'improvviso, Nusmido, Fala Musica, Cantus Modalis and Capella Thuringia. Since some years he is establishing a scene for improvisation in Early Music in Weimar and Leipzig, involving activities such as jam sessions, concerts, lectures and workshops.

Martin Erhardt, geboren 1983, studierte an der HfM Weimar die Fächer Blockflöte, Cembalo und Musiktheorie sowie "Frühe modale Musik" in NL-Tilburg. Derzeit unterrichtet er historische Improvisation an der HMT Leipzig und gastweise an der HfMdK Frankfurt, außerdem Musiktheorie an der HfM Weimar und Blockflöte am Konservatorium Halle. Darüber hinaus ist er als freischaffender Blockflötist, Cembalist, Portativspieler und Sänger in verschiedenen Ensembles für Musik aus Mittelalter, Renaissance und Barock tätig, unter anderem im Ensemble all'improvviso, Nusmido, Fala Musica, Cantus Modalis und Capella Thuringia. Er baut seit einigen Jahren in Weimar und Leipzig eine Szene für Improvisation in Alter Musik mit JamSessions, Konzerten, Vorträgen und Workshops auf.

Milo Machover


milo Milo Machover was born in 1980 in New York, USA. He grew up in Paris, France, and started playing the flute at the age of 8. From 2003 to 2009 he studied at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg, Germany with Profs. Robert Aitken and Felix Renggli. He has taken part in several projects with the Staatstheater Stuttgart (operas by Michael Hirsch and Richard Ayres) and has been a substitute with several orchestras, including the Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock and the Philharmonisches Orchester Kiel. He is a sought-after chamber musician and has performed with many groups, including the flute ensemble Flautomobiland the contemporary music ensemble chronophonie. In addition to his burgeoning career on the modern flute, he has developed a passion for early music. From 2001 to 2007 he was a member of the vocal ensemble Non Papa based in Paris and specialized in 16th century music. Since 2006, he has deepened his understanding of medieval and Renaissance music and developed his modal singing technique through the use of historical solmization as well as mastered the Renaissance transverse flute. He has taken part in numerous projects with Dr. Rebecca Stewart (as a member of Cantus Modalis, concerts in the Netherlands, Germany, Slovenia and South Korea) and Maurice van Lieshout (as a member of Schola Stralsundensis, concerts all over Germany). In addition, he is a founding member of the Ensemble Nusmido,a group of singing instrumentalists dedicated to the historically informed performance of Gregorian chant and early polyphony. He has been teaching the flute in several music schools in Freiburg and in Kiel where he currently lives. In 2011, he was awarded a teaching position for medieval and Renaissance music at the Hochschule für Musik, Frankfurt.

Mami Irisawa


After completing her study of classical solo singing in Japan Mami Irisawa moved in 2000 to the Netherlands to study early music (from Gregorian chant to Baroque music) with Rebecca Stewart and later also with Maurice van Lieshout at the Fontys Conservatorium. After receiving her postgraduate diploma in this subjectshe continued in the same conservatorium, givingmodal singing techniques and modal harmony. After moving to Switzerland in 2007 she has given projects on early Swiss music at the “Hochschule der Künste Zürich”. Miss Irisawa gives concerts with groups such Cantus Modalis, Fala Musica, Syntagma, Musica Temprana, Bachstiftung St. Gallen and the Schweizer Kammerchor. She sings in festivals such as the Utrecht Early Music Festival (Netherlands), the Zagreb Baroque Festival (Croatia) and the Festival of Bresice. Her recordings include the Messe de Notre Dame of Guillaume de Machaut, the Mass, Magnificat and Madrigal of Christiaan van der Amijden and “Stylems” Italian music of the trecento. Since the summer of 2006 she teaches in the Summer School of Early Music in Prachatice in the Czech Republic and in various project weeks at the Center Cantus Modalis in The Netherlands.

Bram Verheijen


Bram Verheijen obtained his bachelor's degree and his master's degree ( 2006) in Early vocal music with Dr. Rebecca Stewart at the Fontys Academy of Arts in Tilburg. After graduating, he also taught singing technique in this Academy.

He has specialized in medieval chant traditions such as Gregorian and Ambrosian, and in the polyphonic traditions that emerged from it.

As a singer he has sung at many international festivals and he still performs regularly with professional ensembles such as Cantus Modalis and Fála Musica (directed by Maurice van Lieshout).

Bram Verheijen leads several vocal ensembles and teaches workshops in voice training combined with monastic spirituality. He also works as a coordinator in the Benedictine Adelbert Abbey in Egmond-Binnen.

Theodor Dumitrescu


Theodor Dumitrescu is assistant professor of musicology at Utrecht University, where he directs the CMME Project for online publication of early music editions. He holds a B.A. in Computer Science from Princeton University and a D.Phil. in Musicology from the University of Oxford (2004). His research and publications center on history, analysis, and theory of European music c. 1500, as well as editorial technique and issues in digital publication. He is the author of The Early Tudor Court and International Musical Relations (Ashgate, 2007). Recent and forthcoming editorial publications include The York Masses for Early English Church Music (Stainer & Bell, 2010), the collaborative online edition of The Occo Codex for the CMME Project (2008), John Dygon's Proportiones practicabiles secundum Gaffurium (University of Illinois Press, 2006), and Josquin’s canonic Missa Sine nomine for the New Josquin Edition (forthcoming).
