Juan de Anchieta was one of the greatest exponents of religious and secular Spanish polyphony before Cristóbal de Morales. As such, together with Juan del Encina and Francisco de Peñalosa, Anchieta’s contribution is of crucial importance to Spain’s earliest musical history.
He was closely involved in the various chapels of almost all of the family members of the Reyes Católicos in both Castile and Aragon, and he played a central role in the musical education of the children. He served as chaplain and singer in the chapels of Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II of Aragon. He was also master of the music chapel of her second son: John, Prince of Asturias and music teacher of the children of Queen Joanna of Castile, ‘la Loca’, which included the future King Charles I of Spain.
His music is transparent and devoid of artifice. It is dark and sober, possessing the characteristic beauty of Spanish polyphony before the Franco-Flemish influence became dominant.
This workshop is designed to introduce the students to the interpretation of Anchieta’s music through the original mensural notation and the modal singing techniques of the 15th and 16th centuries. This notation confronts the musician with many aspects of this repertory which are easily overlooked in a normal modern score. These include: the intervallic and rhythmic tensions within each line, the constantly shifting relationships between the different contrapuntal lines, the subtle modal shifts which in this workshop will be clarified through the use of solmisation, and the primal influence of the text on the inspiration of the composer. Much attention will be given to the interaction between the church acoustics, the choirbook formation and the manner of singing.
The course will be held from the 20th until the 26th of October in the Obrechtkerk, Amsterdam. Each session will extend from 11.00 am until 6 pm. This workshop is open to students, professional singers and early music instrumentalists interested in learning new approaches to Renaissance music and the singing of modal music. It will be a week of intense study that will culminate with a public concert on Sunday the 26th of October.
The teachers: Rebecca Stewart is an (ethno)musicologist and singer, retired head of the early vocal department of the Brabants/Fontys Conservatorium and co-founder/ex ‘maestro di cappella’of the Cappella Pratensis. She received her PhD in ethnomusicology in 1974 after having worked for many years in Hindusthani classical music. Since moving to The Netherlands in that same year she has concentrated mostly on early western music. After having taught for seventeen years in the Royal Conservatory of The Hague (as co-founder of the Baroque singing department and as a teacher of theory), she was invited to begin a new early music department in Brabant in which singers (and later instrumentalists) received a vocally-oriented practical and theoretical education which extended from the earliest chant traditions of Western Europe to the end of the Renaissance. She has published several articles concerning the relationship between singing and modal music. Primarily in her function as leader of the Cappella Pratensis she has made many CDs. After her retirement she formed and is leader of the Ensemble and Center Cantus Modalis. She continues to give concerts, workshops and lecture demonstrations.
Adrián Rodríguez Van der Spoel grew up in Rosario, Argentina, where he studied trompet, choir conducting and composition. He continued his music studies at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam where he studied choir conducting and composition with Daniel Reuss and Daan Manneke and Early Music with Jos van Veldhoven and Paul van Nevel. From an early age he has been interested in folk and early music, which has inspired him in his research and interpretation of the Latin American colonial repertory. He is founder and director of the ensemble Música Temprana. He has been guest teacher at the Fontys Conservatory where he has taught Renaissance music and performance from the original notation, as well as the Conservatories of Rotterdam and Utrecht, the Catholic University of Buenos Aires, the University of Humanities and Arts of Rosario, and the Kurt Thomas Choir Conducting Course. He has led various professional groups such as the opera company "I piccoli Olandesi", "Capella Frysiae", "Collegium Vocale Briella" and groups "Anthonello", "Cappella" and "Contraponto" of Japan.
